About the Fitz Roy
The most prominent mountain in Tehuelche mythology, Fitz Roy is also known by the name Chaltén. As the legend goes, the demigod Elal was carried away from his father’s wrath by a swan that placed him atop the mountain. On arriving, the colour at the summit inspired them to name it Chaltén: ‘blue’ or ‘bluish’ in their language. In real life, this mountain, famous for being one of the toughest in the world despite its low altitude, was climbed for the first time by French mountaineers Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone in 1952.
