Nicknamed the savage mountain or the merciless mountain, K2 is the second highest peak in the world. Known for its formidable climb, only a handful of mountaineers have reached its summit, with a dizzying average of one death to four successes. The first expedition led by Oscar Eckenstein was undertaken in 1902, but despite five attempts, none of the members managed to reach the top… Only on 31 July 1954, after four attempts and a 70-day assault, did Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni proudly plant the Italian flag atop K2!
