The summit of France that overlooks the town of Aubagne, Garlaban rises to 714 meters in altitude. The rock gave its name to the massif, whose highest point is the Butte des Pinsots (731m). Once a landmark for sailors navigating the bay of Marseille, it is also visible from the highways of Toulon and Aix-en-Provence. Its coordinates are 43° 19′ 58″ North, 5° 33′ 13″ East. A playground for Marcel Pagnol during his vacations, the writer reflects on it in the opening of La Gloire de mon père, concluding: "It is therefore not a mountain, but it is no longer a hill: it is Garlaban." The hike to the summit takes about two hours, following the sentier des Dansaires trail, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Marseille, the Sainte Baume, and of course, the sea!
