About Chamonix
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, or as it is more frequently known Chamonix or just Cham’ for locals, is a French commune in the Haute-Savoie department. 16 villages and hamlets are spread out from the valley entrance to the valley floor, including Argentière, les Mouilles and Les Pèlerins. Bordered by the Aiguilles Rouges (Red peaks) mountain range and Mont Blanc, Chamonix shares the title of highest commune in France with Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. The Arve river runs through the town centre. The commune can be accessed via RN 205 nicknamed the “Route blanche” (white road). The Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest in the world, connects Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi at an elevation of 3,777 metres. The first winter Olympic games were held in Chamonix in 1924. The commune is equipped with 47 ski lifts which can transport 57,000 people/hour and home to 113 miles of ski slopes. The Fête des guides has been celebrated on 15 August every year for more than a century.
