About Megeve
A French commune in the canton of Sallanches in the Haute-Savoie department, Megève overlooks the Arve valley, at the crossroads between the Giffre massif and Aravis mountain range in the Prealps and Beaufortain Massif in the Alps. An internationally-renowned ski resort, it has been popular with tourists since 1920 when the Rothschild family decided to make it one of its holiday destinations. In Franco-Provençal, the commune is called Mezdiva. In 1920, the commune had only 5 hotels, a total which had jumped to 25 nine years later. Megève’s two ski resorts offer 250 miles of slopes, 14% of which are black. Legend has it the Muffat and Grosset were the founding fathers of Megève, saving it from the flying serpent, a fantastical monster often known as a wyvern. Dating back to 1732, the Megève cross is a legacy passed on from mother to daughter within families in Megève.
