About Valence
Valencia was founded in 138 B.C. by the Roman consul Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus, In the Middle Ages, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Valencia. Nowadays, Valencia is Spain’s third largest city by population, and boasts an outstanding architectural heritage including its famous futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. The port of Valencia is Spain’s largest container port. The river Turia once flowed through the city but was diverted in the 1960s, following the Great Flood. The riverbed was subsequently converted into a swathe of green spaces, known as the Turia Gardens. Valencia is also known for its Fallas festival. The main celebrations take place between the 12 and 19 March, Saint Joseph’s Day. A variety of gastronomic specialities originate from Valencia, with paella still the best known. The Valencia region is rich in biodiversity, especially in Albufera, where there is a nature reserve. Valencia Club de Futbol was founded on 18 March 1919. Valencia is in Spain’s top division and plays at the 55,000-capacity Mestalla stadium.
