About la Chaine des Puys
Chaîne des Puys, also known as Monts Dôme, is a string of around 80 volcanic hills stretching over 45 km across the Plateau des Dômes, in the north of the Massif Central. The range is located in the Auvergne Regional Natural Volcano Park, in western Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. The first eruptions took place 95,000 years ago and the most recent, 8,600 years ago. According to scientists, a reprise of volcanic activity in the region is still possible. In 2018, Chaîne des Puys was inscribed as a tectonic arena in the UNESCO List of Natural World Heritage Sites. At its centre, the Puy de Dôme stands 1,465 metres tall, towering over its neighbours. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the top by foot, using the mule track. Pozzuolana, the natural rock extracted from the volcanic hills, is a long-prized material, due to its ease of use. Of the hundred or so quarries that have existed in the Chaîne, two still remain today. The GR4, a long-distance hiking trail linking the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, crosses the Chaîne des Puys.
