About Montpellier
Montpellier, in the South of France, is the administrative centre of the department of Hérault. It is one of the few cities with over 100,000 inhabitants whose population has increased year on year since 1945. Its residents are known as Montpelliérains and are nicknamed Clapassièrs or Clapassencs. Five rivers flow through Montpellier: the Mosson, the Rieu Coulon, the Verdanson, the Lez and the Lironde. Montpellier was one of the first cities in France to build a railway network, which opened on 9 June 1839. Its historical centre is called Écusson (coat of arms) because it is shaped like the mediaeval shield and heraldic symbol. Spanning almost 60 hectares, it is one of the largest pedestrianised areas in Europe. Only two of Montpellier’s strong fortifications remain today: the Tour de la Babotte and the Tour des Pins. Since 2001, the municipality of Montpellier has been officially divided into seven districts. Montpellier has some 106 buildings which are listed or classified as historic monuments, the main ones being: the Place de la Comédie, Saint Clément Aqueduct (Aqueduc des Arceaux) and the Porte du Peyrou, also known as the Montpellier Arc de Triomphe.
