About Lisbon
Portugal’s capital and its largest city, Lisbon, or Lisboa in Portuguese, is situated at the mouth of the Tagus river. The historical centre of the city is made up of seven hills, some of which have streets that are too steep for motor vehicles. Due to its steep incline, the city has a famous lift, which opened in 1902, as well as three funiculars. The façades of the city's buildings are decorated with colourful and geometric azulejos, traditional earthenware tiles. Lisbon's festival season peaks on 12 June with the Santo António festival, when hundreds of thousands of people crowd the streets. Lisbon’s most famous dessert is pastel de nata. The oldest factory making these custard tarts has been operating in the Belém district since 1837. Only five people know its well-guarded secret recipe, and they have sworn to never write it down, travel in the same airplane or car or order the same dish in a restaurant.
