About Lille
Lille is a northern French city and the administrative centre of the Hauts-de-France region. Still known today as the Capital of Flanders, Lille and its surrounding area belong to the historical region of French Flanders. The reason why it is known as “Lille” — “Lisle” in old French or “rijsel” in Dutch, both meaning “island” — is that in the past, the city was surrounded by the Deûle river. The TGV arrived in Lille in 1993, followed by the Eurostar in 1994. Every year during the first weekend in September, it holds the Grande Braderie, Europe’s largest flea market, which attracts almost 2 million visitors. Formerly an important brewing centre, Lille is the birthplace of brands like Pelforth, Pélican, Excelsior and Coq Hardi.
