About Biarritz
Situated in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in southwestern France, Biarritz is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and includes 4 km of coastline. Originally a whaling port, it underwent an economic transformation in the 19th century with the advent of sea bathing. Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie chose to holiday there, and the city very quickly became a popular destination. Biarritz’s first surf club, Waïkiki, was established by Jo Moraïtz on 16 September 1950, and the first international competition was held on its Grand Plage on 24 July 1960. The Belharra-Perdun shoal has given its name to an unusually violent wave that surfers watch and wait for. Between 8 and 15 m high, it breaks very rarely and was first surfed on 22 November 2002.
