About Le Havre
Located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, Le Havre borders the English Channel. The port is the leading container port in France. The city and port were officially founded in 1517 by Francis 1. The city is known for its nationally renowned sports clubs : Le Havre Athletic Club for soccer, Saint-Thomas for basketball and the women's handball team from Le Havre Athletic Club. After 2 years of works, the Le Havre tramway was officially launched on 12/12/2012 at 12:12. The first crowded trains took the 13km line between the upper town and the beach. The city centre was largely destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt between 1945 and 1964 following plans from architect Auguste Perret's studio. Only the town hall and the church of St. Joseph (107m in height) were designed by Perret himself. On July 15, 2005, UNESCO recognised Le Havre city centre as a World Heritage Site. Le Havre is the largest commune in France where political elections are held electronically. The singer and fictional persona Alphonse Brown lives in Le Havre.
