About Rennes
Rennes is the administrative capital of the department of Ille-et-Vilaine and the region of Brittany and has some 90 buildings listed as historical monuments. With a student population of 66,000, it is France’s eighth largest university city. Since the LGV Bretagne high speed rail line began operating in 2017, passengers can travel from Rennes to Paris in just 1 hour and 25 minutes. The city benefits from some 868 hectares of maintained green spaces, which is equivalent to 17% of its area, or 41m2 of green space per resident. The city’s leading newspaper is the regional daily Ouest-France, which was founded in 1944. Rennes enjoyed a thriving music scene in the 1980s, when its groups, festivals and live music cafés made it the rock capital of France. The Trans musicales de Rennes music festival created in 1979 takes place every year at the beginning of December and attracts close to 60,000 visitors. Major Lazer, Gaëtan Roussel, Jane Added and la Mano Negra are products of the festival, which has a reputation for showcasing the industry’s next big thing.
