About Cassis
Cassis is a municipality in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Its motto in Provençal is “Qu'a vist Paris, se noun a vist Cassis, pou dire: n'ai rèn vist”. Attributed to the Nobel Prize for Literature winner Fréderic Mistral, this translates as “Anyone who has seen Paris but has not seen Cassis, has not seen anything”. Cassis was the first wine-making area in Provence to be accorded AOC status, in 1936, and a festival is held in September every year celebrating its famous wines. The municipality is characterised by its cliffs, especially the Soubeyranes, which join Cassis and La Ciotat and are the highest in France. The Cap Canaille headland has been a protected site since 1989 and stands 363 metres tall. Situated in the middle of the Calanques National Park, Cassis is home to the most iconic of these deep, narrow valleys, such as the Calanque d’En-Vau and the Calanque de Port Miou. Port of Cassis, painted by Adolphe Monticelli in 1884, hangs in the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
