About La Ciotat
La Ciotat (in Provençal, La Ciéutat or La Ciutat) is situated in the French department of Bouches-du Rhône, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. In 2019, its bay joined the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. From Marseille, La Ciotat can be reached by train, the A50 motorway or the RD559. The climate is typically Mediterranean, and the town enjoys an exceptional amount of sunshine, with over 2,800 hours per year. When Provence was ravaged by an outbreak of bubonic plague in 1720, the brave, co-ordinated response of its citizens ensured that La Ciotat was spared. In 1893, Antoine Lumière built his magnificent château, the Palais Lumière here, at Clos des Plages. On 21 September 1895, 150 people were invited to the château to attend the first public unveiling of the cinematograph Lumière. L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat (A train arriving at La Ciotat station) is one of the first films ever made. The Parc du Mugel, which spans 12 hectares of greenery and plants, has been classified a "Remarkable Garden” by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of France.
