About Clermont-Ferrand
The town of Clermont-Ferrand came about with the joining together of two formerly rival towns Clermont and Montferrand, which was decreed by Louis XIII in the XVIIth century. It is the administrative centre of the Puy-de-Dôme department and the historical capital of the Auvergne region. Clermont-Ferrand was the home of mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal, but also of the Michelin brothers, who founded in 1889 the well-known global tyre company of the same name. The city square Place de Jaude is not only the nerve centre of the town but also a 150000-year-old volcanic crater, where stands a grand statue of Vercingetorix. Two French directors Cédric Klapich and Jean Pierre Jeunet are among the laureates of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (one of the world's leading international festivals for short films). The town is situated at the bottom of the Chaîne des Puys, a mountain that was listed UNESCO World Heritage Sites in July 2018. In the local language, the Chaîne des Puys is called Linha de los Pueis. It counts 80 volcanoes, including the Puy de Dôme (1465 metres ≈ 1 mile), which, at the centre, clearly overlooks the neighbouring summits.
