About Avignon
Avignon is also known as the City of Popes, a reference to the Avignon Papacy, the period from 1309 to 1378 when successive popes and their courts resided in the city, rather than Rome. Founded in September 1947 by Jean Vilar, it now attracts some 600,000 visitors and performers each year.
