About Antwerp
Until 1949, the Flemish city of Antwerp in Belgium boasted the Boerentoren, the oldest and most unusual skyscraper in Europe. Antwerpers are also known as Sinjoren, from the Spanish word señor, which harkens back to the time when the city was part of the Habsburg Empire ruled by Charles V. Antwerp is sometimes known as koekenstad, the City of Biscuits, which is a reference to Antwerp koffiekoeken, or pastries covered with a fine coffee glaze that are famous throughout Belgium. Known as the home of the most prestigious diamond dealers as well as the world's largest diamond exchange, the Antwerpse Diamantkring, an entire district of the city is dedicated to these precious stones. Almost half the diamonds on the planet are cut here! One of the first two newspapers to be printed in the world was published in Antwerp in 1605 (the Nieuwe Tijdingen).
