About La Réunion
Stretching over 1,561 square miles, Réunion is an island situated in the west of the Indian Ocean, to the east of Africa. It is both a French department and overseas territory. The emerged part of the island represents only approximately 3% of the underwater mountain that forms it. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, while Piton des Neiges is the highest point in the Indian Ocean. The rainy season is between January and March and the dry season from May to November. Réunion’s is home to remarkable fauna, in particular birds, some of which are highly-threatened species: Réunion cuckooshrike, Barau's petrel and Réunion harrier. The island is divided into four arrondissements: Saint-Benoît, Saint-Paul, Saint-Pierre and the capital, Saint-Denis. Roland Garros was born in Saint-Denis in 1888 and Michel Houellebecq in Saint-Pierre, in 1956. Every 20 December, inhabitants celebrate Freedom Day, commemorating the abolition of slavery in 1848.
