About Palma
Palma, or Palma de Mallorca, came into being with the Roman military conquest led by Quintus Caecilius Metellus in 123 B.C. It is the capital of the island of Mallorca and of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. Its inhabitants are known as Palmesanos and Palmesanas. Palma has around 51 days of rain a year, with an average temperature of 16 C. Palma airport serves some 26 million passengers per year. The historic Ferrocarril de Soller train is still in operation, linking Palma to Soller, in the north of the island. The city has a velodrome which hosted the 2007 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Every August, the Copa del Rey regatta is held and the bay and port fill with beautiful yachts. The impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, a Gothic building constructed from the 8th century, towers over the bay. Famous residents include painter Joan Miro, whose mother and wife were Mallorcan, and who worked and died in Palma.
